Hairy Bikers Asian Adventure

The Hairy Bikers did a series in Asia. The 6th and final episode was done in South Korea. I liked it.

Unlike a lot of shows that went to South Korea it didn't focus on the bizarre. It focused on what is normal there. Samkyubsal, fried chicken, traditional markets and street food. It was pretty good and had me reminiscing. Watching the market scenes had my mouth watering.

I liked how they talked about what food would be a hit back in the UK. And talked about what was actually popular in the West.

The kimchi making was well done. It reminded me of the time I made sauerkraut with my Great Aunt. Damn I miss her. :(

I really enjoyed the way they looked at Korean history too.

Strangely enough I even liked the way Gangnam Style kept showing up. :)

Damn I want some bibimbap now. And samkyubsal. And yangyum chicken. Sundae!!!!

No Reservations - South Korea

I made a post on Flint's Follies that really could have been posted here since it was about South Korea. Anothony Bourdain does a travel/food show called No Reservations and did an episode in South Korea. I will have to write about it more some time.

Anyway, there is a great quote about soju from that episode.

"You know, when I get back to New York I am going to be pouring that stuff on my cheerios in the morning."

I could picture him doing just that. :)

I try to keep this site to just South Korea related stuff but I do find there is some crossover, like talking about the Amazing Race episode in South Korea. I only posted it in FF, not here, but it is Korea related. Maybe I should have just stuck to one blog?

M*A*S*H

I was just watching a M*A*S*H rerun. Radar had hit an adjoshi on a dark road coming back to camp. The adjoshi didn't have any broken bones but you would have thought he was dying in his hospital bed. It turns out he was faking it and had jumped in front of the jeep to scam some money. This wasn't his first accident. I was reminded of how Koreans are today about blood money.

It reminded me of DongChim hamming up his injuries with the complicity of his doctor to get more blood money out of the guy who hit his car.

It reminded me of the asshole who started a fight with one of my friends so he could get blood money. A guy who had a history of doing that with people, the police knew about it, and they still pushed paying him blood money.

Watching it happen on TV brought all these things to mind. I wonder if the storyline was based on an incident from during the Korean War? I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

The more things change the more they stay the same.
