Year 1 - 1st Week Observations

Hi

I was asked if it was safe to drink the water. I have been told it isn't. But you can but bottled water VERY cheap.

Local alcohol is interesting. There are 2 traditional drinks I have had so far. Makali, which looks like orange juice, has an earthy aroma, and a little kick. The most common is Soju which basically tastes like weak vodka. It is the most popular drink of the locals. There are a lot of Soju bars around.

One (cultural?) observation is that their pedestrians would NOT survive long in Canada or the US. They walk where they want, when they want. Usually in groups down the middle of the road. (They tend not to do this on the main streets, but some do. Korea has one of the highest rates of car-pedestrian accidents in the world.)

I will write more when I have a chance. :)

Take care
Flint

This was emailed towards the end of my 1st week in South Korea.

Ah soju. Not my first alcohol in Korea, that was beer, But I have pounded down my fair share of it. Especially during 2002 World Cup. :)

The reason I said (cultural?) is that I really didn't think walking like a moron with your head up your ass is cultural. However, that is how some people explained it to me. A lot of apologists use CULTURAL to try and explain away things that they can't with logic.

  1. What is the cultural explanation for walking drunk in the midddle of the road? I am curious.

All I heard was he/she is drunk and has no control.

  2. I have wondered that myself. Hell just look at what EPIK considers to be a culture tip.

Please EPIK explain how traffic jams are cultural.

  3. I drank the water here for the first month before I found out it is unsafe. I hope I don't die early because of that!

  4. A friend of mine works for the Korea Water Commission. He said the water is safe in newer buildings. It is mainly because of the older pipes that it are unsafe.

Now my doctor (in Korea) told me to worry about hepatitis. He said something like 10% of Koreans are carriers of Hep A or B.

Best to have your twinrix shots.
